The Representation of Women in Art

The representation of women and the reaction of the viewer to the train of Edward hopper and Cindy Sherman. Christy cox SF06 The first artist I will be discussing in this essay is Edward Hopper, a painter of light and shadow, and also a painter of women. Famed for his peculiar mix of voyeurism and discretion , he paints isolated, detached mickle, often women who appear to be lost in their own private and personal thoughts. We could almost feel risible looking at his paintings, as if we are invading the charrs privacy and personal space. It was for this reason that in 1950 Hopper was dubbed The unfathomed Witness; because of the way he motley people plainly outside of their lives, looking in. He stands outside of the scene, un noniced, as if wait to catch women in a moment in which they would to the lowest degree appreciate to be seen. Hopper had been doing this since his childhood ; he desire to observe people, without being noticed himself. Hoppers manoeuvre sparks many questions for the viewer; is the woman looking at something, or into nothingness? Might she be so control that she herself is preoccupied to anything going on around her? Sometimes, we think that these scenes are not meant for the eyes of others, that maybe these paintings should not rush been painted at all?
